I’ve been a trustee with CATH since 2018, having heard about the amazing and much needed work they do in our community, I felt I could give back some of my time and skills to volunteer as part of the Board. As a people professional with 30 year’s experience in leadership, culture and governance across a range of sectors, including my current role as Chief People Officer in NHS Scotland, I can make a real contribution to the work of this fantastic charity, which is loved by our colleagues, supporters, our community and our service users. I’ve seen CATH grow and develop and we have so much more to offer. I’d really encourage others with a range of skills and experience to think about how a trustee role might give you a new challenge and opportunity to give back. It was my husband who introduced me to CATH when he volunteered as a befriender in 2014 and then became as a development worker whilst studying to be a CBT therapist and so even before I was a trustee, I was lucky to be involved in the CATH sleep outs and other fundraising activity.

Working as an Engineer in London and then as Minister in different locations in Scotland I've been involved in responding from a Christian faith background to homelessness and related issues for over 40 years. I lived for a while in a homeless hostel, and as a student in the Grassmarket Mission Community in Edinburgh. I spent 4 months travelling extensively in the USA experiencing responses to homelessness in over half the states and bring these experiences to support the work CATH does. I enjoy making and listening to music, reading, cinema and enhancing my DIY skills. In my 20s I was part of a team which cycled across the USA - and now enjoy more leisurely (electrically assisted) cycling.

Volunteering with CATH began for me helping out in our charity shop before also joining the board. I volunteered in a shelter for those experiencing homelessness in Glasgow when I was younger and have always maintained an interest in trying to alleviate issues surrounding this ongoing problem in our society. Having a background in education I hope that some of my skills can be put to good use on the CATH Board and perhaps also at a more practical level at some point in the future. Now that I have retired from teaching I spend most of my spare time with my animals and volunteering with the RDA organisation at my local group.

I volunteer with CATH because I’m inspired by its work and committed to enabling those who might be feeling lost to derive hope from a helping hand in their community. I have a background in healthcare, with experience in people-centred care, service management and strategy development. Outside work I enjoy cycling and cooking for friends and family.
